Review: How to pick a financial adviser (could be the most lucrative decision you ever make)

Picking a financial advisor can be hard.

Working with a financial advisor means discussing some pretty personal topics. Not just your actual finances, but what is important to you, and what it is that you actually want to accomplish in your life. Getting this relationship right is important.

If you aren’t comfortable with your financial advisor, it’s hard to get the most benefit possible out of the relationship. And there’s a lot of benefit to be had from working with an advisor. As the author points out, a large part of an advisor’s job is to help you avoid mistakes (we prefer to say that we help you understand the choices you are making so you know what to avoid).

It’s not just helping you stay disciplined with your investments (though it is that.) An advisor can help you with more than just your portfolio. Advisors are there to help you with anything that intersects money.

One very important thing that the author mentions is that it is better to start working with an advisor before a crisis hits. Advisors aren’t miracle workers—there’s only so much we can do after you bought that variable annuity in your IRA (that’s a really bad idea, by the way). We will do everything we can to help you get back on track, but the real value of an advisor is to help you avoid crises all together by creating a plan and helping you understand how to get where you want to go.
