REVIEW: Good references are key in the search for a financial adviser

Finding the right financial advisor for you can be hard. You need to find someone you can trust and work with effectively. But the search for your advisor can take many forms.

If you’re looking for help with your finances, there are a lot of options out there and you want to find the best one for you. Word of mouth works great in this search—we get several of our new clients from current clients referring friends and family—but it isn’t the only way. You could look at financial advisors’ websites, read their blogs to see if their investment philosophy meshes well with your financial goals, compare online reviews, and more.

It’s important to look at all of your options because not all advisors are created equal. An advisor that is perfect for your friend may not be right for you. Different advisors offer different services. Some are purely focused on investments. Some only do planning. Some do both (like us). You want to be sure that you will be getting the support you need from your advisor.

You also need to be sure you can work effectively with your advisor. You don’t need to be close friends, but there needs to be a level of trust in the relationship. To get the most out of your relationship with an advisor you need to be able to open up to them and dive into what can often be sensitive topics. If you aren’t comfortable with your advisor, you won’t be comfortable giving them the information they need to help you.
